Brian De Palma’s glam rock version of the famous Phantom of the Opera story stars singer-songwriter Paul Williams as Swan, an evil record tycoon who steals the work of talented composer Winslow Leach (William Finley), along with the object of Winslow’s desires,  Phoenix (Jessica Harper).  Swan’s machinations land Winslow in prison, but he soon escapes only to suffer a terrible facial disfigurement via vinyl record press.  And thus The Phantom is born, terrorizing Swan’s new club, The Paradise, until he’s made an offer he can’t refuse.

A singular achievement in cult cinema, Phantom has gained legions of fans over the years thanks to a young De Palma’s over-the-top creative vision and star Paul Williams’ memorable score.  There’s truly nothing like this crowd-pleasing genre mashup that even today remains ahead of its time.
